This week I deliver to you,Lisa Buteux of Comfort and Joy Soap. Lisa is my kind of woman. I can relate to her passion for creativity and being her own boss. Her products are absolutely beautiful just like she is and we share an addiction to scent. You can tell that Lisa has a genuine love and appreciation for her customers, it comes through with every bar of soap and every package she wraps up. This is her story. Check it out!
Q: Tell me about Comfort and Joy Soap Co. and how you got started?
Comfort & Joy Soap Co is a small, handmade bath & body company located in New York’s scenic Lower Hudson Valley.
I began making soap in the summer of 2010. I always loved handmade soap! (Patchouli was always my favorite!) If there was a soapmaker at a craft fair, you could always find me at their booth, smelling all of the soaps! Being a creative person who can’t sit still for very long, I decided to learn to make soap myself. I had been into fiber arts for years (even owned sheep and spun their wool!), but shoulder problems forced me to give it up. (And, sadly, my sheep, too!)
After almost a year of making tons and tons of soap, I knew I wanted to turn this new passion into a business. I have that adventurous, entrepreneurial spirit, so I jumped in with both feet. In 2011, I joined my first Farmer’s Market, and opened my online store. My husband, Chris is also a creative person, and is an amazing woodworker. He makes all of my soap molds, cutters, displays, shelves, and just about anything I could possibly dream up! He is definitely my Right Hand Man, aka, my Knight in Shining Armor!
Q: What is your favorite aspect about being a small business owner?
I love being able to dream big, and work to make those dreams a reality. It is wonderful to be my own boss. (Although, I am my own cruel taskmaster!) I love to be able to conceive new product ideas and create them. My absolute favorite thing to do is blend scents. It’s definitely a passion of mine. Owning my own business is HARD WORK, and I put in many long hours. There is a lot of pressure on small business owners, so it is definitely not for the faint of heart. However, it has been the most rewarding, exciting, satisfying job I’ve ever had.
Q: What should a customer expect from Comfort and Joy Soap when making a purchase?
From the time they place an online order, or make a purchase at a market or show, I want my customers to feel cared for and important to me. I hope to bring them comfort and joy when they use my products. When they pick up a bar of soap to smell, and that look of delight spreads across their face, I’m SO happy! I’m addicted to scents of all kinds, and I think my customers are, too!
Q: What are some of your best selling products?
My soaps are my biggest seller. People love the unique scents, the packaging, and the way it makes their skin feel. Most of my soaps start out in someone’s drawer or closet before they make their way to the shower. My customers love to scent their rooms with my soaps!
Another big seller has been my Patchouli Perfume Oil. It’s an international best seller. I’ve sent it to Russia, Australia, Norway, and Portugal, to name a few places.
Q: Who or what has been the biggest inspiration for you?
My wonderful family and friends have all been an inspiration to me in their own way. My strong faith inspires me to be the best I can be, and to practice kindness in all that I do. I am also inspired by the many, awesome indie makers out there! It is so wonderful to watch fellow entrepreneurs blaze exciting new trails in this business. I never cease to be amazed and inspired by their energy and creativity.
Q: Do you have any special events or offers coming up?
In the spring, I have an annual Mother’s Day Sale. People can sign up for my newsletter on the website to receive info on special events, new products and sales.
I am excited to introduce some new scents in early March. I recently added luxury Body Oils to my line. I also have plans to introduce some new products this spring, including a facial serum!
