This week I deliver to you, Lisa Thorstenson of Cloud Nine Soap Co. I had the opportunity to build a relationship with Lisa over the past year. Her drive and perseverance is inspiring and her approach to life is refreshing; not to mention she makes a beautiful line of bath, body and home products. Check out her story!
Q: Tell me about Cloud Nine Soap Co. and how you got started?
Cloud Nine Soap Co. officially launched in 2010 but I have been a hobbyist for many years, my whole life really. Having a creative outlet is what gets me through the difficult times in life. I divorced in 2007 and part of the fall-out was having to close my bricks and mortar gift shop in 2009 when my son's father moved out of state and I found myself in a child care crisis and on very shaky ground financially.
I'm an R.N. by profession and I was at a cross roads; I could go back to work as a nurse making great money but that also meant enormous stress and crazy hours, OR, I could gamble with the money I'd saved and bootstrap a soap business. I knew that this would also be enormous stress and crazy hours but it would allow me to be home with my son and do something that I completely love. I went for it, and I went all-in from day one. To supplement my start-up and gain exposure (I had zero marketing budget or dollars), I accepted a job as the Market Manager of our local Farmers Market and it was here on Saturdays that I began selling my soap and gained my reputation for high quality soaps. I credit those years to my loyal customer following today. Fast forward 3 years - I took another leap of faith and resigned from the Farmers Market in 2012 to work full time in my craft.
