This week I deliver to you a women that inspires me directly, I turn to her for business coaching, mentoring and just good old-fashioned friendship.  She is a gift to me and other Long Island Indie Women. Q: Tell me about Ba6 Botanicals and how you got started?
Wow, where do I start? It really started with a major change in my life! I became very interested in healing naturally – body, mind and Spirit. I became a Reiki Master and I dabbled in a few other modalities, then I discovered essential oils. I learned a little bit from books and “playing” with oils. One day I found an online source that gave be the boost toward receiving my Aromatherapy Certification. After 250 hours of study, 25 case studies and a research paper I complete on Essential Oil Therapy for Raynaud’s Syndrome, I was official a certified Aromatherapist. I just made blends at that time. It wasn’t until my kid’s bath time one evening, I read the ingredients on the baby lotion bottle – I was mortified, to say the least. I threw that bottle away and vowed NEVER to put bad ingredients on our skin again. I found a few handcrafted lotion recipe books, tried a few and honestly didn’t like any of them. They were oily, didn’t emulsify well and didn’t feel luxurious to me, So…I put on my mad scientist hat and created my first lotion formula. All my friends and family loved it…so it became my first signature lotion.

Q: What is your favorite aspect about being a small business owner?
I was a stay at home mom. Having a “job” and taking my kids to a sitter was NOT an option for me! (There’s a story for another time.) I love the flexibility of being my own boss and creating a business around my values and lifestyle priorities. Plus, I’m an out-of-the-box creative thinker, so working for someone else never gave me the creative satisfaction I needed.

Q: What are some of your best selling products?
My signature lotion – Chamomile & Lavender All Over Body Lotion has been a long time best seller. My facial line is also very popular. On a trip to Italy a couple years ago we spent a few days in Sorrento. I fell in love with the Sorrento lemons – the biggest and most exotic lemons I had ever seen. The sweet, yet tangy fragrance had me! Since I couldn’t bring a lemon home with me I created a blend that was my version of a Sorrento lemon, which went an olive oil lotion base I formulated. It’s call Olive Mia Pele (translates to “Olive My Skin”). It’s only available in September and is my biggest specialty seller to date - I have pre-orders out the wazoo months before it comes out. That’s kinda cool!

Q: What should a customer expect when purchasing one of your products?
Personal care and service! One thing I established early on in my business was that I never want Ba6 to be just another product on a shelf! When I walk into a large Natural food store, and see a wall of body products, it’s hard to figure out what products would be the best for me. It’s confusing and frustrating! Plus, I’m big on knowing the ingredients in the products I use. Most of the products on a shelf have some natural and organic ingredients, then you get to the “junk” which most people don’t know.
I never want my clients to feel confused about what is good for their skin. I spell it out and teach them what the ingredients are and how they benefit their body. That’s important to me and I want to make it easy for people to know what they are getting in Ba6 products.

Q: Who or what has been the biggest inspiration for you?
Gosh, this is a tough one because so many things have inspired me. I guess I would have to say my clients are my number one inspiration! Everything I have made is because someone came to me with a need or skin care challenge that wasn’t getting “fixed” through the normal channels. I would not be where I am today without all of them. Of course my children inspire me! I want to teach them that they can do anything they set their minds to – no matter what it is.

Q: What types of information can I find on the Ba6 Botanicals' blog?
You can find do-it-yourself recipe – things you can take from your cupboard or fridge and create your own skin care products. Of course I have information on essential oils and the best practices and proper use of them along with contraindications and warnings. They are volatile oils and need to be used with caution – this is huge for me as a teacher. Just because it comes from nature doesn’t mean you can use it willy nilly. Using them incorrectly can cause serious problems and injury. I also share entrepreneurial wisdom and business building tips.

Q. Do you have any events or specials coming up?
One of my biggest in-home events in called Champagne and Facials. We get a group of women together, pour a little champagne and I teach women how to do their own at-home facials. It’s a spa evening at home with your BFF’s! I also sponsor events for speakers that want a different kind of evening relaxation and pampering for their participants.
